Research...

Research: provides the information required to understand the needs of the publics and to develop powerful messages. It is also an integral part of the planning, program development, and measurement process. It is essential to any public relations activity or champagne, in other words it is the beginning of a process that seeks to bring about a specific objective.

Research is also another word for listening, before any public relations firm can develop a program they must collect and interpret data. It is essential because it informs managers as they make policy decisions and map out strategies for effective communication programs. Different types of research accomplish organizations objectives and meet its information needs. However all resource have their pros and cons, the first and foremost information needed before starting to do a research is “defining audiences and segmenting public” that is gathering detailed information about demographic, life style, characters and consumptions patterns helps to ensure that the message reach the proper audience or publics.

My interview with Heather Plett

                                                                        Tow # 2

The PR pro I chose is Heather Plett, (above photo) she is specialized in leadership, creativity, community, and change. For 16 years she worked as a professional communicator, mastering the craft of storytelling and learning the best way to convey important information through words, images, and film. She is currently Teaching, writing, public speaking, and consulting. She was in senior leadership in federal government and non-profit for 12 years, coaching, mentoring a lot of people, and facilitating more meetings, community gatherings, and press conferences. Miss Plett teaches writing, public relations, and effective facilitation at the University of Winnipeg. I met Heather Plett last year, she was my instructor in writing for public relations, and upon reviewing this assignment she was the first person that came to mind. It took me a while to get hold of her due to her busy schedule.  When I finally did I was honored and excited  to do the interview with her.

During my interview with her, I asked her what a typical day was like, she stated “Very busy”, and that she teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and when she is not, she spends time with family or marks papers. She proceeded saying as a PR practitioner, she has to continuously be on her feet and be willing to learn new things, in order to stay current in the PR field. When asked about the biggest project she has worked on, in which she is proud of, she stated she worked for a non-profit organization, and worked on a campaign to raise awareness about hunger in Africa, and that her all time dream was to travel to Africa, and when the opportunity came along she was happy and excited to work with the team. Miss Heather stated she travelled with a film crew to Ethiopia, Africa. Her organization provided food and successfully fed over 1,000 children. She further stated she was honored to have such opportunity and was able to interact with children affected by poverty/hunger. “It was a very great and amazing experience for me, having the opportunity to visit another continent and making a positive change”. I further asked miss Heather what and how she does it to keep current in the PR industry, she replied I Read lots of blogs, do on -line research,
network and pay attention to the social media, she insisted she learns from others in the industry like quest speakers, students, friends etc. I asked her what she wishes she have known before starting a career in PR? She replied.” Let me think, I wish I had trusted my self more and asked lots of questions.

as our interview continued, i asked her,how important is writing in your career?  She stated "Very, very important" as a PR practitioner that’s the “key” you have to be able to write and continuously work on improving it.  If you’ve ever worked for an agency, how is agency life Different from corporate PR life?  She replied, have never worked for an agency in the PR field, the closest have come is when I worked as a consultant. What three tips would you offer someone just starting out in PR?  She clearly stated 1, work and improve on writing. 2, Ask lot of relevant questions related to the field he/she is interested in working. 3, Make friends in the department of special interest

After my interview with miss Plett and reviewing all the information I got from her, I concluded PR field is where I see my self-working. Heather’s passion, devotion and inside ideas about the field are inspirational to me and I’ll keep them in mind on completion of this program, and apply them in the future.
